25-06-2012 : McArthur: Broadband Investment Can Help Unlock Highlands & Islands Potential
Commenting on the announcement by the Scottish Government about broadband investment in the Highlands and Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP for Orkney Liam McArthur said:
“Whilst there is no new money in today’s announcement, it is nevertheless welcome.
“This follows an earlier commitment by UK Ministers to significant funding for the Highlands & Islands and it is critical that both Scotland’s governments work together to deliver vital broadband and mobile phone coverage needed by those living and working in the region. Effective collaboration will avoid the risk of duplication and scarce resources being wasted.”
“I am in no doubt at all that the absence of high quality, reliable and affordable broadband service and mobile phone coverage is one of the most serious challenges facing the Highlands & Islands. Initiatives such as BDUK and today’s announcement by the Infrastructure secretary, however, can help unlock the potential of this region.”
