02-03-2010 : McARTHUR GIVES CONDITIONAL WELCOME TO FLYING A&E DOCTORS

Orkney MSP, Liam McArthur, has given a conditional welcome to the news that a flying doctor service piloted in the West of Scotland is to be extended to cover the whole of remote and rural Scotland. Emergency Medical Retrieval Service provides flying experienced accident and emergency or intensive care consultants to patients in remote and rural communities

Commenting on the news Liam McArthur said, "Although Glasgow is rather further away from Orkney than is ideal, there will no doubt be times when this service will be beneficial to Orkney and it could save lives. So it is a welcome move. But it does nothing to remove the need for a locally based air ambulance in Orkney which can get to the isles quickly and which can use short weather windows to get in and out which an aircraft coming from Inverness or Glasgow cannot.
