09-03-2010 : McARTHUR ATTACKS THREAT TO FERRY TIMETABLE

Orkney MSP, Liam McArthur, has attacked the threats to the timetables of NorthLink's Aberdeen to Orkney and Shetland sailings made by the Scottish Government today.

Liam McArthur said, "Northern Isles residents will be very concerned by this announcement which, despite being very vague, carries clear threats of reduced services to the Northern Isles and new sailing times that don't suit the needs of island businesses, residents or visitors.

"The Minister is quoted as saying that his Government is committed to ensuring all remote and fragile communities are linked into the wider Scottish economy - this won't be the case if services are cut or if they sail too early or arrive too late for the needs of vital island businesses.

"This threat to the Northern Isles, when the Western Isles continues to have reduced ferry fares as a result of their bogus RET trial, shows just how little the SNP Government cares for the Northern Isles. Orcadians and Shetlanders will not forget, or forgive, this blatant discrimination against their interests."
